1. What is a Sacrament?
A Sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.
2. What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is the sacrament through which the Holy Spirit comes to us in a special way and enables us to profess our faith. It also completes our initiation into the Catholic Church.
3. What is the outward sign of the Sacrament of Confirmation?
The outward sign of Confirmation consists of the following:
A. Anointing with oil.
B. Laying on of hands.
C. The words, “be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
4. When did Christ institute this sacrament?
Christ instituted this sacrament at the feast of Pentecost, which occurred 50 days after his resurrection.
5. What is grace?
Grace is a special gift from God.
6. What are the graces offered in Confirmation?
Two types of graces are offered in this sacrament: Sanctifying; Sacramental.
A. Sanctifying grace is having or deepening a relationship with Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Through this relationship, we are saved from eternal damnation and given eternal life.
B. Sacramental graces are special and unique gifts which are given by Christ through that particular sacrament. The Sacramental graces of Confirmation enable us to do the following:
1 strong and perfect Christians.
2. Soldiers of Christ.
3. Prophets of the Good News.
7. What are the chief powers that are given to us with sanctifying grace?
The chief spiritual powers consist of the following:
A. a deepening of the three theological virtues: faith; hope; love.
B. a strengthening of the four cardinal virtues: temperance; justice; fortitude; prudence
C. An outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom; understanding; counsel; fortitude; knowledge; piety; fear of the Lord.
